We answer your questions - Information events of the Study Center for Computer Science

All students who have received a study offer from RWTH Aachen via DoSV for the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science will be invited by the SC (Studiencenter Informatik) to a digital information event of the Computer Science department via the ZOOM video conference system.

You will receive the access data with the welcome e-mail that will be sent out in the next few weeks.

A second information event for all enrolled students will take place during the introductory week for freshmen. In the events you will be informed about the current status of planning for the winter semester and answered your questions.

We look forward to seeing you!

Orientation Week - more than Info, Fun and Orientation

Welcome

Orientation days for first-year students: 04. until 07. October, 2022

It is tradition at RWTH Aachen for your student representative council (FSMPI) to organize a framework program for new students' first few days at university. FSMPI collaborates with the department and the mentoring group of Computer Science as the university administration.

We highly recommend participating as this offers you a possibility to get interesting and important information about studies, establish contact and make new friends, or just have a great time and fun for a few days.

On the first day of the Orientation Week , you will be welcomed by the rector. After that, the subject-specific introductory event in computer science takes place. At the end of this event, you will be divided into mentoring groups and leave the lecture hall together with your mentoring group and your mentor. Spread over the entire freshers' week, you will take part in great fun events, such as the city rally, which is well known beyond Aachen, but also in informative meetings, such as the RWTHonline introduction or the professor talks. The first week is considered a great start to the course by the students, before the university starts with the first week of lectures.

Of course it is possible to find all of the necessary information yourself. However, it is helpful to network with others right at the beginning to get off on the right foot for your studies.

I am still close friends with the people I met during the orientation week. It makes studies much easier, because we can help each other and because there is always someone who understands what you're talking about. Especially when you're frustrated. And that happens pretty often....

I highly recommend the orientation week to everyone. I'm glad I went back then, even though I originally thought it was just child's play.

Fit for your studies: the 5th compulsory module "Mentoring Informatik - Erstsemester-Gruppen"

  Copyright: © Fachgruppe Informatik

With the mentoring program of the Department of Computer Science, we would like to support you in getting started with your studies and preparing for the challenges of your studies. That is why the course Mentoring Computer Science - First Semester Groups is one of the compulsory modules in the first semester of the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science in addition to the two computer science and mathematics courses.

The course will take place in smaller groups. The module is assessed with an ECTS credit. There is no alternative module with which you can acquire this credit. Since the program is tailored to the needs of new students, it makes no sense to postpone the module to a later semester. Therefore, the module is a hard requirement for all compulsory courses from the fourth semester onwards.

Welcome

04.10.2021 : Allocation to the mentoring groups during the subject-specific introductory event for Bachelor students in the first semester.

Registration for the module via RWTHonline and access to the learning room

In any case, regardless of whether you attended the introductory event or not, please register for the module using the "Registration Mentoring Informatics - First-Semester-Groups" registration procedure in RWTHonline.

You can find click instructions for registration in the RWTHonline documentation portal.

After registering, you will automatically receive access to the RWTHmoodle learning room. This can take a few hours (up to 24). RWTHmoodle is our digital learning platform, on which we provide not only the learning and work materials, but also all current information - including Corona-related, short-term changes. Please take some time to orientate yourself in the learning room.

The semester has already started and you have not yet registered?

Please send us an email immediately to .

True or false? Not much happens in the first week of lectures.

Lexture Hall Students in the lecture

FALSE!

Each course has its own rules. In computer science, lectures start in the first week of lectures. We therefore strongly recommend that you take part in the lectures from the first week of lectures.

In the first appointment you will learn everything you need to know about the event:

  • How are the lectures going?
  • Is there a global exercise?
  • How does the allocation to the small practice groups work?
  • What achievements do I have to achieve in order to be able to take the exam at the end of the semester?
  • etc.

After the framework conditions have been clarified, the professors immediately start with the actual lecture, i.e. the processing and communication of the topics. The first sessions are also often used to repeat basics that every student should know.

Please do not let reports from other students prevent you from attending the courses right from the start. Please see for yourself how important it is to be there from the start.

FAQ

Why is participation in the first semester introductory course of computer science important?

This is a subject-specific event of the department for Computer Science. There are at least two good reasons not to miss out.

  1. This event is usually held the first day of the orientation week. Here you get not only an overview of the entire Bachelor's course of study, but also current information about mandatory courses and events during the first semester. The professors of the mandatory courses also often introduce themselves.
  2. You will be assigned to a mentoring group during this event. Computer Science Mentoring is one of the obligatory events during the first semester. After the event you have the opportunity to get to know your mentor and the students in your mentoring group in a relaxed atmosphere.

You can find the time and place on the Study Center website.

I missed the orientation week. What now?

Send an email to as soon as possible. You will be assigned to a group as quickly as possible.

How does the current situation affect my studies?

We are currently assuming that the coming winter semester will largely be held as a face-to-face semester.
