The Computer Science Department − Who We Are and What Drives Us
The Computer Science Department was established in 1986 as part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences. The department is characterized by the combined expertise of 30 research units, closely linked to engineering and many other disciplines and research institutes.
Thanks to the high quality of our research and education, the department regularly takes top-positions in relevant research and university rankings; a fact well documented by the internationally renowned academic distinctions and prizes awarded to our academics.
Research
In the Computer Science Department about 30 research groups are working in different research areas. Most of these issues are of particular social and global relevance such as our commitment to international climate or aerospace research.
Top-level research, international projects and interdisciplinary collaboration shape our academic profile and form the basis of our success in the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. The department participates in two of three clusters of excellence and in the Graduate School of the Excellence Initiative. Thus we contribute to the excellence status of RWTH Aachen significantly.
Teaching
Innovative programs, leadership positions in major university rankings: computer science at the RWTH Aachen is guaranteed first-class. In all bachelor's or master's programs we offer high-calibre academic qualifications with practical experience from the beginning. About one-fifth of the students come from all over the world. A highly international environment and multicultural diversity all contribute to a stimulating learning atmosphere.
Intense student support by the professors, a network of partner universities in several countries and intense contacts to our cooperartion partners already provide the opportunity of gaining international study and work experience during studies.
Interdisciplinary Cooperation
Computer Science is a driving force for almost every technological development. The Computer Science Department works closely together with engineering and other disciplines. Due to the network with the cross-faculty and interdisciplinary Forum Informatik and the Regional Industrieclub Informatik we closely cooperate with the regional and supraregional industry.
Close cooperation with other research groups and the industry focused on a contemporary transfer of the developed novel methods and the resulting experience in the industrial applications and modern work processes.
